Program Dates:

June 5 - July 30, 2022
(Departure: June 4)

Program Description

Rutgers in Russia is an intensive academic program that offers students the chance to immerse themselves in the Russian language and culture in order to achieve rapid language gains. The program is open to Rutgers and non-Rutgers students, Russian majors and non-majors who wish to advance their Russian language and culture proficiency in one of Europe's most enchanting cities—St. Petersburg.

Course of Study

Our eight-credit language immersion program in St. Petersburg is designed to advance students through one full year of university Russian in the course of eight weeks. Through our partnership with the Derzhavin Institute, students will participate in group courses that meet Monday through Friday mornings for a total of 20 academic hours per week. These classes will be in coordination with language support offered by the program director. Course components include grammar, conversation, reading, writing, and literature and culture segments.

Cultural Activities & Excursions

Cities can be more than just a place to study; a city can be a space that holds the story of a nation's culture. St. Petersburg has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As part of the program you will have the chance to attend many organized group activities that will introduce you to St. Petersburg's vibrant culture. Activities include visits to museums, parks, monuments, churches, and important neighborhoods; tours of St. Petersburg's bridges and canals; and group outings to plays, concerts, operas, and ballets. Excursions to the suburban palaces of Peterhof, Tsarskoye Selo, and Pavlovsk will also be organized. Students may decide to take weekend trips to Moscow or Novgorod. Active involvement in the cultural life of St. Petersburg is highly encouraged throughout the program.

Accommodations & Peer Tutors

Among the highlights of the Rutgers in Russia program is the chance to live with a Russian host family. These arrangements include double room accommodation with breakfast and dinner. Use of host family kitchen varies by host family. In addition to being exposed to the Russian language and culture through host family interaction, you will be paired with a Russian peer tutor who will help introduce you to St. Petersburg.
