How can we comprehend the ways in which facts are constructed and construed at a time when short-format social media platforms gloss over complicated situations like that in the South Caucasus or accept ready-made narratives for news like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine? This talk will examine Russia’s imperialist aims in post-Soviet countries and states, including Armenia, Ukraine, and Nagorno-Karabakh, while likewise examining media responses to the wars in these regions, including the role of state and independent media in narrativizing geopolitical conflicts and establishing (un)official “truths.” It will also address the dangers of bothsidesism, and the political models that underlie it. Dr. Arpi Movsesian is a Visiting Lecturer in the Department of German, Russian, and East European Languages and Literatures at Rutgers University. She has book and article publications on Dostoevsky, Shakespeare, and Armenian literature that focus on the intersections of literature, politics, and philosophy. Her most recent book manuscript is entitled Bloodied Ballads, Living Empires: Transculturality in Armenian Lyrical Verse (forthcoming from Rowman & Littlefield).
